Updated Association of Lincoln Presenters website

15 Jul

When people first hear about Life as Lincoln, they usually ask, “So there are people who impersonate Lincoln for a living?”

And we reply, “Oh, yes. There are hundreds of them, and they even have an association.”

We got to know the wonderful members of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, or ALP for short, back in April 2009 when we attended their annual convention in Washington, D.C. They’re a great group of people, extremely informative on all things Lincoln, and it was nice to finally get to meet and see so many of the people who we’d spent time talking to on the phone.

Their website has just been updated, and they’ve created an ALP Facebook page too. Check them out and get an idea of what all the Lincolns out there are up to!

DVD Update

Happy 202nd Birthday, President Lincoln!

12 Feb

Happy 202nd birthday to our sixteenth president!

We wanted to update you on a few things going on with our Lincolns and with the film…

First, we’d like to apologize for the extended delays on DVD sales and screenings. As you may remember, Split Pillow, the wonderful non-profit film organization that funded Life as Lincoln, folded at the end of 2010. We’re sad to see Split Pillow go, as it was a great resource and outlet for local Chicago filmmakers. Without Split Pillow’s help, this film would never been made. Unfortunately, Life as Lincoln is stalled while the logistical and legal details are worked out transferring the rights of the film to its filmmakers. We hope you understand our delay, and we look forward to sharing the film with you soon.

Second, we wanted to wish Larry, Murray and Lonn a happy Lincoln’s birthday and best of luck in what is sure to be a busy season for them. We know from having spent time with Murray over Lincoln’s birthday that the anniversary of the president’s birth is a hectic time for presenters!

And on that note, we wanted to share a little story from Murray Cox. If you’ve seen the film, you’re aware that Murray spends each Lincoln Birthday with a few of the different local Boy Scout troops from near Wabash and Fort Wayne, Indiana. We had a ton of fun in Indiana, and the Boy Scouts provide endless hilarity as they chat with Lincoln himself. Murray shared this cute story about one of this year’s Scout events:

At this year’s Lincoln event for the Boy Scouts, we had a quiz, where the answers were also provided, so the kids could learn something about Lincoln. One young Cub Scout was having me help him with his spelling as he wrote the answers. For Lincoln’s birthplace of Hardin County, KY, I had to help him spell county. For Lexington, KY, where Mary lived, I had to help him spell Lexington. I started to help him spell Springfield, IL, where Abraham & Mary met, but he got very indignant, and told me matter of factly, “I know how to spell Springfield, because that’s where the Simpsons live”.

As just a little reminder, here is Murray in Life as Lincoln, chatting with a young Scout at the very same event two years ago.

Welcome to the new Life as Lincoln website

19 Jan

Welcome to the new Life as Lincoln website!

We’ve decided to switch things over to this new URL and format, which we think is pretty nifty. It’ll be easier for us to keep you updated with news of DVDs and upcoming screenings. We’ll be adding more to the new site in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

In the meantime, we encourage you to check out the new New York Times blog, Disunion. The blog follows the sesquicentennial of the Civil War day by day, starting with Lincoln’s election in the fall of 1860. Some really refreshing perspectives from Lincoln historians are given on the time and the man.

Last chance to see Life as Lincoln’s premiere

17 Feb

Come out tonight to the Gene Siskel Film Center at 7:30 PM to see Life as Lincoln’s last premiere screening!

We’ve had a great time at this past weekend’s screenings. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to see the movie, talk history and reenactment and enjoy some of Chicago’s independent film scene! There were even a few couples out on their Valentine’s Day dates to see the film–a gesture that us Lincolnphiles and history fanatics can most certainly appreciate.

A big thank you to Murray Cox and Lonn Pressnall for making the journey out to Chicago to see the film and meet our audience. We all had a blast.

Here are a few snapshots from the Friday night premiere.
